How to tune a guitar with a tuner

How to tune your guitar using the Zoom2 H2 Handy Portable Stereo Recorder

Whether playing solo or in a group, the most essential aspect of becoming an accomplished guitarist is to properly tune your guitar. Guitar tuning can be done in different ways, and every guitarist has their own. While some aspiring guitarists want to tune by ear, there are other methods of tuning that work when the human ear isn't as reliable an instrument as imagined.  Two familiar ways to tune a guitar are comparing notes with a piano or with another guitar that is known to be in tune. Other methods include using a tuning fork, computer software and electronic tuners. Of all these methods, using an electronic guitar tuner is the easiest and the most accurate.

Electronic guitar tuners are inexpensive and work well for both acoustic or electric guitars. Equipped with a built in microphone and an attaching cable, electronic tuners detect the guitar's pitch in semitone steps. The Zoom H2 Handy Portable Stero Recorder is a multi-function recording device that not only digitally records audio, it also features a dedicated chromatic guitar and bass guitar tuner.

Instructions
Step 1

From the main menu screen, first select the proper mode  - either stero or 4-channel mode.

Step 2

Select the TUNER function by pressing the REW or FF keys to "TUNER".  Continue by pressing the REC key. The display will now show a tuning menu for either calibrating, selecting the CHROMATIC TUNER, or tuning a guitar or a bass instrument.

Step 3

Select the CHROMATIC TUNER screen and press the REC key. This will activate the chromatic tuner function and the on-screen display will switch to a nine position arc. The Zoom H2 automatically detects and displays the note being played. The correct frequency and pitch are displayed at the top center of the display.

Step 4

If the guitar's pitch is too high, or sharp, the screen will display an indicator to the right of the correct pitch. Conversely, if the guitar's note is flat, the screen will display an indicator to the left of the correct pitch.

Step 5

Tune the 5th String (A). Once the 5th string is tuned correctly, it's easy to tune all the other strings. Begin the process by tuning 6th string (E) next.

Step 6

The guitar tuner will automatically detect the pitch and indicate if it should be tuned to sharper or flatter for the correct pitch. Repeat this process until all 6 strings are in tune.

Step 7

Once you have tuned the guitar properly several times, you will begin to "tune", or train your ear automatically.
